2016 ADS Annual Members Meeting

Meet the Clinicians

Steve Holm
Southern Pines, NC

Steve Holm has been training and showing driving horses and ponies since he was a child growing up in Wisconsin.

Over the past forty-five years, he has competed in and judged turnout classes at Devon, the Royal Winter Fair, the National Horse Show, Walnut Hill, the Kentucky State Fair, the Wisconsin State Fair, the CAA show in Lexington, KY, and the Villa Louis show in Prairie du Chien, WI.

Steve has trained the turnout that won the Devon pleasure drive championship seven times, and has won turnout classes at many shows.  Steve is an expert on antique carriages, and will be speaking about the carriages, and answering questions on Ms. Reid’s collection.

Steve is an American Driving Society judge as well as a board member and past vice president of the Carriage Association of America. He has given driving seminars and workshops throughout the United States and Canada. In 2010, Steve had the honor of judging four-in-hand presentation at the World Equestrian Games in Lexington, Kentucky.

He is also a Master Evaluator for the Carriage Association of America’s Driving Proficiency Program.

Dave Quist
Vass, NC

Dave Quist has been working on carriages for seventeen years.  He started by doing maintenance on a used carriage purchased in 1999 by his wife, Marcie.  That purchase led to owning more carriages, requiring more maintenance and repairs.

It didn't take long for the word to get around their Southern Pines, NC neighborhood that Dave was someone who worked on carriages and was able to provide a number of services from general maintenance to complete overhauls and wreck repairs.  He now receives carriages from up and down the Eastern Seaboard for maintenance and repairs.

Ann Pringle, the owner and editor of Driving Digest Magazine, approached Dave in early 2013 and asked if he would write a regular feature article covering carriage maintenance for her newly acquired magazine.  Dave has been contributing to Driving Digest for three years now covering numerous topics on carriage maintenance and repairs.

Dr. Thomas M Daniels, Jr.

A native Floridian, Tom returned to the University of Florida for his Veterinary Degree after receiving his B.S. from Duke University. He then completed a private practice internship at Apex Veterinary Hospital in southeastern North Carolina in order to gain some practical sport-horse and pleasure-horse experience. From 1989 to Present, he has made his home in Southern Pines, NC, first as the sole practitioner of Pinecrest Equine, and now as a partner in Southern Pines Equine Associates with Dr. Jim Hamilton. He is a member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, the American Veterinary Medical Association, and the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society.

During the time that he has practiced in Southern Pines, his focus has concentrated primarily on Sport-Horse medicine, but he also includes broodmare management and alternative therapies among his areas of interest. He completed the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society course and has integrated the Eastern approach into his practice with some very exciting results. He feels that the complexity of syndromes experienced by the various disciplines of the sport-horse requires a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches that are being offered in his veterinary practice with James Hamilton. In the summer of 2000, Dr. Daniel received the great honor of joining the U.S. Equestrian Team as the team veterinarian for the 4-in-Hand World Championships held in Germany. That team went on to finish 6th overall- the best finish for the U.S. Team since 1990.

Barry Dickinson

I have been in the horse business as a professional over half a century. I was brought up around driving animals and that has been my main interest. I have worked in Canada , England and the USA. I have done several clinics and have done talks for the American Driving Society and the Carriage Association of America. I currently live in South Carolina.

Robin Groves, Trainer, Clinician and Competitor
Robin Groves has been driving since her teenage years and still feels she learns something new almost every day.  She has been working with horses professionally since she graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1970 with a B.A. in Zoology and certification to teach riding.

Her participation in combined driving events began at Fair Hill in 1986, and she has been competing at the advanced level on and off (depending on the level of her current horses) since 1993.

Robin has twice represented the United States at the World Singles Championships, in Poland in 2008 and Italy in 2010, and was the USEF National Singles Champion in 2007 and 2010, driving Lana Wright’s (and now her) Thoroughbred/Connemara cross, Thor’s Toy Truck, a.k.a. TJ.

Throughout the year, Robin teaches clinics for drivers and riders all over the United States.  She has been the instructor for the GMHA Wheel runners driving series for more than 25 years.

At home in Brownsville, Vermont, she and her husband Wilson run a training stable for all types of horses and all levels of riders and drivers.  They like to say that they teach good horses and nice people to ride, drive and jump.  Both of the Groves compete almost every weekend of the year at combined driving events, carriage pleasure shows and competitive trail drives.

Robin in available for driving and riding lessons and clinics if you are lucky enough to catch up with her.
