Mid Winter Driving Conference
February 11, 2017
Verdoy Fire Department - Latham, Ny

The Saratoga Driving Association is delighted to invite all horse enthusiasts to join us just north of Albany, NY for a quiet day of learning and fun with the experts.

How Do You Prepare for Good Performance

John Greenall & Jeff Morse

Achieving success with horses doesn’t just happen, no matter how hard we hope it does. It takes hard work and a systematic approach  to all the different aspects that go into driving. Our speakers, who each have fifty years experience, are going to take us through three aspects of driving. Driver, who needs to be prepared for what they plan to do. We change roles - being trainers, competitors, recreational or pleasure drivers. How should we approach our different roles? How do we prepare ourselves?

Preparing our horses— what advice and experience can these seasoned veterans bring us. What have they learned in their 50 years of driving that might be that nugget of wisdom we take away.Equipment— properly chosen, presented, adjusted, and repaired can make the difference.

Forty Years Training the Mounted Police
Dick Pelzer

From the point of view of our need to be ready for what we may encounter, we have asked an expert to come and share the mounted police experience.  A Policeman for 48 years, retired from the New York State Park Police, he has been training and certifying Mounted Police Officers for 38 years under standards from New York State. We’ve asked him to share his experiences, advice and techniques he uses to train.

His latest experience is Training New York State Police Mounted Unit and have invited

Captain Kristina Sisbower is the Officer-in-Charge of Troop C in Oneonta to come and join in the lecture. Captain Sisbower has been instrumental in the resurrecting of the NYS Police Centennial Mounted Detail for their 100th anniversary this spring and she drives.

From Carriages to Cars
Barbara Haertlein

We are particularly delighted to invite Barbara Haertlein to present this historic lecture developed by Tricia Haertlein. Through extensive use of photographs from the period, she will take us though the transition from horses to motor vehicles. What changed, what didn’t and which of our assumptions are false.

Barbara and Tricia Haertlein have been promoters of driving their entire lives. We are especially honored to invite Barbara this year after her sister’s passing. They were the inspiration for our conference, as we flagrantly copied the one they held every year in New Jersey. This will be a wonderful lecture. And we are honored to have Barbara with us.

Registration at 8:30 AM   — Speakers start at 9 AM We will have you out the door at 4 PM.

Each year we strike a different tone. This year we want to get the professionals to share what they learned.  We change, the conditions under which we drive changes and so we are taking the long view. Our experts have years of experience, culminating with a presentation of the historic transition from the horse to the engine. What can we learn that will help us and stimulate our thinking.  I guarantee everyone will go home with some new piece of of information in their head.  This is a friendly, warm, quiet setting, where you can comfortably listen to the speakers, meet new people and see old friends.  This is a fund raiser.

 Featuring GlennVan Oort, Auctioneer

We have giveaways, raffles, and lots of money raising techniques that all come back to you. Bring something to add to the auction! Everyone gets 5 raffle tickets at registration, then you can buy more.

Last year we used money we raised to buy Digital timers for Driving Derby and Cones Courses, and supplement clinics to keep costs down. Every penny we earn goes into promoting our sport – buying equipment, hiring clinicians, importing judges from around the country and reducing competitor costs

This is a non-commercial event and Breakfast, Hot Lunch, Snacks included.  Chicken and Biscuits for lunch with Salad and drinks.

Look for all the latest updates and register at

Join us from 8:30 to 4 at the Verdoy Fire House, 988 Troy-Schenectady Road, Latham, NY.   Route 7, just 1.7 miles left, off Exit 6 of Interstate 87 Northway, very accessible even in winter weather.

If you want to come from out of town—a hotel room close to the conference is cheap!  The conference is right off the highway just close to Interstates 90 and 87.  It is an easy trip, so come and join us.  We have plows, electricity and lots of food. Snow date February 18, 2017
