ADS selects new host for 2018 North American Preliminary Championships

Cross Plains, WI. – The American Driving Society, Inc. (ADS) has selected a new venue and date for the 2018 North American Preliminary Championships (NAPC). The Green Mountain Horse Association (GMHA) will host the championships on August 24-26, 2018 at their facility in South Woodstock, Vermont.

The 2018 NAPC had previously been planned for the Hickory Knoll CDE, but due to a death in the Hickory Knoll family and relentless flooding at the event location, this year’s NAPC had to be relocated.

Currently, GMHA holds the only Combined Driving Event in New England, drawing competitors in the preliminary division from Pennsylvania to Canada. GMHA staff report they eagerly await the positive attention the NAPC will bring to carriage driving in the New England area.

Event co-organizer Simon Rosenman was the Technical Delegate and Scorer at the 2017 NAPC at Grand Oaks. International Course Designer Richard Nicoll will be returning for a second year, as will TD Ellen Ettenger. The ground jury includes President of the Jury Francios Bergeron, Mickie Bowen and Sem Groenewoud.

Walter Bradeen, GMHA Board President, is a driver himself and is enthusiastic about the addition of this season highlight to the GMHA calendar. Preserving the art of driving is a personal mission and he is a major advocate in the growth and sustainability of the driving discipline.

GMHA is a 501c3 non-profit organization in scenic South Woodstock, VT that holds equestrian events in five disciplines. The organization is dedicated to educating equestrians of all ages and preserving trails and open space. Tracy Ostler, GMHA Executive Director said, “GMHA and its surrounding community has so much to offer as a destination. We hope that the competitors will bring their friends and families to not only spectate, but also enjoy everything that this great area has to offer. We look forward to seeing the drivers in August!”

The ADS (501c3) is the premier carriage driving organization in the United States educating and licensing competition officials, judges and technical delegates on a nationwide basis, along with promoting education and competition for CDE, pleasure and recreational driving. The ADS is the US Equestrian National Affiliate for Driving.

Submit your Nominations for ADS Volunteer Award

Recognizing Those Who Give So Much to Driving with ADS Volunteer of the Year Award

Driving shows and club events of all sorts, and the administration of the ADS would not be possible without the hard work and incredible dedication of volunteers.  Our volunteers do everything from parking cars in blazing heat to obstacle judging in pouring rain, from office work to course construction, airport runs for officials and opening their homes to out of state competitors. We simply could not begin to run our organization, clubs, and our competitions without this cadre of capable and generous people.

All of our volunteers deserve to be recognized, but there are some that stand out for the extra miles they go and the efforts they make.  Please take a moment to think of a standout volunteer, and submit a nomination with the following information:

The name and contact information of the volunteer

How was their contribution outstanding?

A few words of praise – how has this particular volunteer made your life easier? An event/show/clinic made better?

What did they do that was above and beyond? Please submit a high-resolution photo if available.

Please include your name and contact information on the nomination

The recipient will be gratefully acknowledged at the ADS Annual Members Meeting in December and featured in The Whip.

Nominations should be submitted to info@americandrivingsociety.org by September 1, 2018.

Celebrating an ADS Honorary Director

At the 2018 ADS Winter Board of Director’s Meeting, ADS President Mike Arnold read aloud a letter from Elaine Kendig announcing her resignation from the board. Arnold thanked her for all the help she gave him personally as well as to others and thanked her for her service.  ADS Treasurer Dan Rosenthal moved that the ADS Board elect Elaine Kendig to the position of Honorary Director in recognition of her many years of valuable service to the ADS. The motion carried unanimously with enthusiastic support from the board members and staff.

Elaine’s introduction to the world of equines began on the back of a plow horse and driving Welsh ponies around her family’s tree farm in Litiz, Pennsylvania. “When I moved to Chicago I had the opportunity to receive “proper” training and participated in Hunter, Jumper, Dressage, and Eventing disciplines.

“My move to Tucson, Arizona gave me the opportunity to serve as secretary as secretary to the local hunt club. I was an ASHA (USEF) licensed Dressage Technical Delegate, served as Chair of the United States Dressage Federation (USDF) Bylaws Committee and also as USDF Secretary. After moving back to Pennsylvania my interest changed to carriage driving and I became active in ADS. I’ve had the honor of serving on the ADS Board of Directors as Chair of the Governance & Bylaws and as a member of the Executive Committee.”

The staff and board members extend their sincere thanks to Elaine for her years of service to ADS and look forward to her continued work with ADS as a G&B committee member.
